Anyone Have A Good Remedy For Sinus Infections?

Recommended Posts

I know a lot of us have chronic sinus troubles, does anyone have any effective remedies or treatments for sinus infections? I just took an antibiotic last month for one and this morning woke up with that same sinus pain. I don't really want to take another antibiotic so soon, any suggestions?

My son has struggled with these for years. Have you tried the NeilMed Sinus Rinses? He has found these helpful.

I use my neti pot every day, and more than once a day during allergy season. The wonderful thing about it is that it ACTUALLY is harmless and has no side effects! When I feel stuffy, I add as much sea salt as I can stand and use as hot of water as I can tolerate. I used to have sinus infections with every cold, but have cut them down to once every few years now!

My allergist has me use a solution that combines saline & antibiotics called Wilson's Solution in my neti pot. It delivers the anti-b's right to the problem area with NO side effects. If I use it continuously for 2 -3 weeks, it will knock out a sinus infection and prevent them too.

My issues may not be bacterial as much as fungal, so to my NeilMed system mix, I add a few drops of a natural antifungal called Agrumax, which is an extract from grapefruit.

I prefer the NeilMed bottle to the neti pot b/c I have poor movement in my neck to get in the proper position for the neti pot--and also, the bottle allows for a faster flow of liquid volume to pass through and clean stuff out.

My daughter is prone to sinus infections/problems. I started to give her licorice root (capsules) at the onset of a cold and she has done much better! I do not have sinus issues but I have been taking licorice root (to increase my bp) for 1.5 years and have not had a cold or even the sniffles in that time.

May be worth a try unless you have high blood pressure.

There is also a condition called Vasomotor Rhinitis, where the issue is NOT an infection or even allergic, but an autonomic swelling of the nasal passages. I have this as well as allergic rhinitis. If your sinuses are constantly swollen, it will mimic an infection but antibiotics and antifungals won't touch it at all. My allergist said that people who react with sneezing, stuffy nose and eye watering to strong smells or bright sunlight (I do to both) probably have vasomotor rhinitis. The goal with that is autonomic control and a daily effort to keep the swelling down. I neti every day to do this and have had far fewer episodes. Again it is treating the symptom and not the problem, just like everything else with POTS.

Cannot say enough about the Neil med. My whole family uses it and no more infections! My 10 yr old son was sick often. no more. Also my doc told me you can use tap water- very cost effective. If you can drink the water you can shoot it up you nose!

AS everyone else said. The neti pot..I use a squirt bottle version which basically does the same thing. My doc also told me to put a few drops of oregano oil in with the salt solution. It's supposed to have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. But you have to take it slow with the dose because it is strong! First I put one drop than when I got used to it I put two.

I have also have frequent ear infections and therefore am looking for alternatives to antibiotics. Last time had a cold I took one clove of fresh garlic, chopped up with a glass of tomato juice each day. Usually it takes months of getting better and worse before I finally feel well. Probably due to it getting into my ears and causing an infection. But this time I didn't get an ear infection. And I felt better within two weeks. So I'm really hoping that the garlic was the reason.

Also cutting out dairy has helped me.

I just realized someone suggested colloidal silver... I'm going to disagree. You can get metal poisoning from colloidal silver; it was used heavily before antibiotics were discovered and can cause permanent skin and eye discoloration. There are other options, such as the xclear mentioned. I use agrumax.

Again, the NeilMed system is really my only saving grace with infections. My allergist wont see patients long term if they aren't using it or some other rinse method b/c the research shows how much rinsing matters in keeping your sinuses clear of allergens, bacteria and foreign substances that can cause inflamation, which in turn can cause stuff to get blocked and infected.

I have a terrible fear of using a nettipot... I'm scared that it would feel like choking on water? Lol. I do have lots of issues with my sinuses though. Chronic Rhinitis, sinus infections (about 4-5 a year), allergies, etc. My lung specialist put me on Avamys. It works well so far (when I remember to use it) but of course you have to take it all the time for it to work... I do steam treatments when I need them. I'm really curious about this nettipot thing though...

It took me several days of staring at my new neti pot to work up the nerve to try it. By that point, I was being ravaged by high fevers and almost through my second round of antibiotics and just suffering too badly. I was extremely pleasantly surprised, it was very good for me. There are certain things that make it easier: If you can get any air through a nostril start with that one, use as hot a water as you can stand (cold water is painful!) and start with the recommended amount of salt. Head angle takes a while to master, but you won't drown, if is drips down the back of your throat, adjust your head angle ) generally it is better to tuck your chin in to your chest before you bend at the waist. I have neti-ed for 8 years now and it has kept my sinus infections down to maybe one every three years instead of monthly.

My mother tried it and it made her very dizzy the first couple times, so you might want to sit on the toilet and hang your nose over the tub. My kids have used their own neti pots since they were 4 years old. My husband prefers the "rhino horn" and gets them off ebay.

There are several tutorials on youtube, if you want to watch first.

Good luck!

The NeilMed is not a neti pot, it's a bottle where you're head is leaning down and forward over the sink--the water should not go down your throat at all if you are positioned correctly. I cannot use a neti pot because of my fused neck and being unable to tilt my head the way you're supposed to.
