Eye Leaking Tears From The Outer Edge

Hey,

I've been managing my symptoms pretty well these days but I still have ones that flare up and annoy me really bad. The nausea is still there. But one that really worries me (because I'm vain and care about the way I look lol) is my left eye leaking from the outer edge. This has been going on since I was a little girl, and whenever it flares up it is just horrible. The skin has permanent damage---it's brown, wrinkled, and my eye is a bit droopy there. It's been leaking non-stop tears for about 2 weeks now and it's raw and terrible. Lots of irritation and the pain makes my eye water even more than it already is. It has to be from all the salt or something in the tears. Anyway, I was wondering if you guys had an suggestions, my doctors don't. This is really annoying =/ I wish I could make it stop leaking or somehow protect the skin from damaging further.

Yeah, it really is a shame. Whenever I laugh too hard or cry, it starts it and doesn't stop for days at a time. Blehhh

I'll get leakage like that from my outer right eye sometimes. I usually think it has to do with allergies, but I'm not sure. Mine only lasts for a couple of hours, though. Sorry you have to suffer with this condition so long. That must get awfully frustrating. Have you seen an eye specialist?

Take care,

Jana

Eye doc just said I have a defective tear duct. Different medications and coffee and stuff sometimes make the opposite happen---that eye has HORRIBLE chronic dry eye. There are two kinds of lubricants that the eye produces supposedly, the kind that actually lubricates it, and the tears that wash away stuff. Well my eye doesn't produce enough lubricant, and it leaks tears. The doc has nothing to offer me but a referral to an eye surgeon, but I don't have the money and that sounds terrifying lol He doesn't even know if repairing it will work, because there's no way of knowing if it is linked to my Dysautonomia. It's an annoying mystery...

Oh btw, today I soaked my eye for a long time with warm water, and I didn't put any makeup on, and it seems to have subsided. Dunno if it's a coincidence or if soaking it worked. I go to work tomorrow so we'll see if it starts up again.

I am amazed at how many things I'm continuing to see that are related to "POTS". I have the exact same thing with my left eye.. Hard to keep make-up on because it's scar tissue on the left corner now.. So many things to learn...

Isn't it eerie? I always had a feeling that all the numerous things wrong with me (that no one else I knew could relate to) were somehow connected. I remember running across some info that producing not enough tears or too many tears is connected to nervous system dysfunction though.

I'm so upset by my left eye though, I empathize about the makeup!! Every single morning it frustrates me.

Avoid the make up, and keep taking antihistamines. Perhaps some hydrocortisone cream could help the inflamed skin but I don't know if you're meant to use it near to the eye.

Do you get headaches too? My left eye waters when I get a certain type of migraine. It's also possible to have a migraine where your head doesn't hurt- I am wondering if you get any kind of vissual aura, nausea or othher symptoms that could fit the pieces of this puzzle?

Hope it gets better. Maybe an ophthalmologist who does regular eye tests could give you some advice- they're very knowledgeable people. I used to work as an Optician's assistant before University and it was amazing the stuff that the optician could tell from someone just by looking at their eyes- they can even tell whether or not you're taking the contraceptive pill!

I go to two diff eye docs but they just would rather blame it on my mysterious nervous system lol It's a shame. I might shop around for another eye doc, just hopefully I can get some kind of referral.

Funny thing is, usually when I get a headache, it's intense behind that eye. I've always hated that eye... it gets tired easily, and the bones around it ache. I always seem to get a headache behind that eye. In high school, I'd always ask my mother if I could just get the eye removed cause I'd be fine with wearing a patch lol It's a different shape than my other eye cause of muscle issues, so I've always hated it. Under a black light, the skin around it is all dark and damaged. I have to put makeup around it a bit to make it look like it isn't bruised. Usually with my glasses, people can't tell at all...but I can. I hate pictures because of that eye.

I think you've convinced me to find another doc though, there has to be something with that freakin' eye beyond the leakage. It'd be nice to have it fixed before it looks older and more damaged with age.

melissa,

it sounds like dry eye or sojourners syndrome...I deal with this for what seems like forever. I go to a top eye doctor who puts plugs in my tear ducts. I have been known to rub them right out. THE LAST SET Were larger and was told surgery could be and option. MY EYES GET SO PAINFUL, that I perfere the dark, wear sun glasses, and restasis eye drops a script helps some.

I'm due for new plugs....I found that mestinson helped my eye muscles get stronger. The eyes used to droop. ; ) Something good is happening here!!! Good Luck there is help out there!

I just saw your about me page, you're a very attractive young woman with your handsome boyfriend... You are blessed!

I looked up sojourners syndrome and couldn't find any articles about it...but that sounds very interesting! I think I definitely haven't been to the right eye docs yet. It'd be wonderful to not have to do surgery, I didn't know plugs was an option! Interesting! Definitely going to look into that.

Thanks for the advice, and the compliment! I better update my profile, cause my long term boyfriend and I just recently broke up and moved on. We're best friends still and he's supporting me while I get back on my own two feet, but yeah....we've been through a LOT together, and health problems sure do wear on certain aspects of relationships. Unfortunately we just didn't work out. I'm happy right now though, becoming independent again =) Unfortunately I've been bed-ridden this past weak with the most painful womanly cramps I've had in my life, but doc is helping me out. Ran a bunch of thyroid tests, getting the results hopefully today. Can't wait to get out again! There's this new special someone I'd like to start seeing =)

melissa,

moving on.... i know what that's like... Your welcome for the compliment....best of luck in the romance department!!!

This link just explains dry eyes better and it's a symptom of sjogrens.... Even though they get dry, they try to tear and moisten the eye....

http://www.garytracyod.com/mt/2007/11/what...t_dry_eyes.html

Also, if you are on the pill that also as that messes with your eyes, along with allergy meds and a few other meds.

Be well.

My son had this as a baby and had surgery at six weeks old. I was told that it can be an in-office procedure if you sit still enough! They take a tiny tube and balloon open the tube leading from the tear duct into the nose; it worked well for him. Vasomotor rhinitis would close off that little tube and it is an ANS issue, so I don't know if it would work for you, but it is not an awful procedure (just to reassure you.)
