Really Red Eyes, And Bladder Control Issues.....

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to find out if anyone else has these problems...One thing is along with all my other issues with my eyes, they turn red. Not just a little irritated red, but like I've been in an over clorinated pool in the sun all day then had them scrubbed with a brillo pad red. The redness sometimes extends to my skin around the eyes. It is very painful. Does this happen to anyone else??

Then the other issue (which is a little more embarrassing) is my bladder leaks all the time. Especially when I sneeze, laugh, or cough (which I do all the time) I also won't even feel like I have to go to the bathroom, then all of a sudden there it is, and I can't quite make it. Does anyone else share these issues with me? Does anyone know if they are related to dysautonomia at all??

Thanks

Suzy

Hi,

Sorry, I don't have experience with either. What you describe is stress incontinence. A lot of the control "down there" is at least partially ANS controlled, but some is voluntarily controlled muscle movement. So, it makes sense that the ANS part could be a little haywire with a dysautonomia diagnosis. Which may mean that you have to work on the voluntary part to compensate. Look up stress incontinence for exercises, tips, etc. to work on strengthening your voluntary control.

For the eyes... you recently got some other diagnoses didn't you? (Sorry, I don't remember what they were...) But, could it be part of that?

Sorry I can't be of more help. :(

Suzy,

Two things, first you need to see a doc for the urinary incontinence. Could be an infection. Also some of us have problems with a lack of estrogen, and it effects all systems in our pelvic area. Second, I might try eye drops-no preservative- and rinse eyes. ( can refrigerate) feels great. And get that looked at. I am a frequent flier at tthe eye and ear clinic here. Just like Cheers "Where Everybody Knows My Name" !!!!!!!! M

Hi Suzy~

I don't have the same problems that you do, but I do have problems feeling like I have to urinate a lot, especially at night. Sometimes I'll go to the bathroom about 3-4 times in the first hour of trying to get to sleep, and then hardly have to go. Annoying, no?

Take care,

potsgirl

Thank you everyone for your replies...sorry it took me so long to get back, I start posting, and then next thing you know I am too tired to keep going....sorry!

Hi AJW, Thnks for the advice. That really helps a lot. I didn't even know what to call it other then leaky me! I have tried doing those exercises they have you do when you are pregnant. Kegel I think it is called. I just don't seem to feel it when I got to go. I wouldn't even know I was leaking if I didn't feel the wetness!!uughhh!! I thought I shouldn't have to worry about this till I was my grandma's age! That helps to know that it is at least controlled by the ANS, so I at least can put aside my worries that it might be something else. And I did have a positive test for the mast cell thing, although both tests weren't positive so they didn't diagnose me with mastocytosis, but I am going to try and get in with a doctor who knows about mcad. And I think but I don't remember that there was somthing about red eyes for that. So I will go look that up today. Thanks a lot.

Hi Miriam, I was checked for a UTI, and I am good with that. At least I was a while back, and I had the same problem then. I also think that is interesting that you got to the eye and ear clinic a lot! I keep getting "ear infections", and they just don't seem like infections. They start with these things like pimples on the outsides of my ears, (they are probably on the inside too, who knows.) then it just gets real irritated , and then for months I am fighting these. And the funny part is that I got one right after having a strange reaction to an antibiotic. I seen somewhere else that you have mastocytosis. Is this something that may be related, do you know? Thank you.

Hi potsgirl, anoying YES!! Although I don't get strong urges to go I will suddenly feel like I got to go, and then make a run for it, and usually not make it! Then sometimes it's niagra falls, others it's just enough for me to have to change my clothes!!! :) It's like my bladder has run amuck!! Thanks for sharing that! I'm glad to know I am not the only one having some problems there!

I deal with both. Red eyes happen every time I try to go to a large store, like a T.J. Maxx or Target. Go figure??? Red eyes are very common with MCAD and indicate a "reaction." I've started taking Pataday and it helps a bit. I can only guess that being on my feet for such a long time sets things off OR maybe the huge variety of items for sale causes a reaction- who knows?

My bladder leaks like crazy. My gyno recommends that I use a tampon before I take a vigorous walk or do pilates. I'm the worst when I have a cough- Yikes.

Sorry you're also dealing with this, Suzy.

Hugs-

Julie

Hi Julie,

Sorry you are experiencing this also. But I can't tell you how relieved it makes me to know I am not alone! I looked up the MCAD doctor, but haven't called yet. I guess I don't know what to say. You know something along the lines of your really far away from me, and I can't come there right now, but maybe you can treat me over the phone!! :(

I know that a good sale can cause all sorts of reactions in me!! ha ha! I have a bad cough, and cough all the time really hard. And the reaction from the bladder can also be really hard!! I wear a pad all the time now...My husband says he'll get me depends!! (it's a good thing he's so good to me or I'd clock him!! ha ha!)

How are you doing?

I don't really get how this works, but a tampon will prevent the leaking. My gyno taught me this trick. It really works and is great for when you want to exercise hard :( So much more pleasant than a pad or heaven forbid- a diaper!

Might I suggest seeing a Uro-Gynecologist? I was having some different symptoms. My doctor sent me to uro-gyne. She was wonderful. When I made a comment about having seen a urologist she said "its all in what you do". Much, much different. Just an observation. M

Hi Miriam,

What is a uro-gynecologist? Is it a gynecologist and urologist combined?

THX,

Suzy

HI there. Yes, I have both problems.

Do you have sweating issues too? I was recently told that the bladder and sphincter problems can occur in a person that has the sweating problems (Hypo and Hyperhidrosis)

For the red eyes, I use visine allergy. It is in a green bottle.

You mention your eyes look like they have been in a chlorinated pool, my eyes feel like that as well. I feel like I have bleach in my eyes.

For bladder issues, the leakyness comes and goes. When it comes, i use pads. I cannot use tampons as they cause inflammation ... so I'd be careful there.

Hi jjb,

That is such a relief to hear there are others here too. I had the qsart I think it was sweat test when they did my ttt, and they said it was normal, so yay I'm normal somewhere!!

Yes! My eyes also feel like they are burning. I have to put a wet washcloth on them just to get some relief.

I don't use tampons because after I had my second child, and had my first period, I used one, and then had a really high fever, and severe diareah, that landed me in bed for 4 days. I didn't know if that was why, but haven't used one since. I'm sure there are others who aren't bothered by them at all though. Thanks for that tip.

Thank you Miriam...I will be looking further into it, as I put out other fires!

Hello .

I have the most awful 'red eyes' they have been so bad that I look like I'm part of Dracula's mates and have just had a nice long 'snack' on something !!!!! :o

I find that if I over do something they come on and are with me for two to three days before disappearing again .

Once when setting up a Halloween event for around 100 kids ( for my charity) when I arrived to 'perform' the next day ( dressed as a witch ) my eyes had 'blown ' over night and every one thought I had those whole eye lenses in to make myself look like that B) and they thought I looked really great .............on the photos I looked really scary :o

I didnt have the heart to tell people that my eyes where killing me and that my vision was all blurred .

Do you have vision problems to I wonder ????

I have this strange vision problem , when I get up from laying out flat I sometimes cannot focus and watching TV or reading is just not possible at all for around 20-30 minutes until my vision has stabilized.

I am seen by our specialist eye hospital in the UK about every 3-4 months and I have drops for my eyes as on occasions the red eyes can cause me so much trouble that the mild pain becomes really painful , and yes , not just the white of the eye is red but around the eye lids hurt as well , but I dint know if this is pots at all , all I've been told is this is not the normal thing to have happen if you get overtired.

Hope you dont have to much trouble with them , I've had mine for over 8 years now and they dont seem to be getting any better .

And yes, I do have chronic sweats 24/7 day in day out which make my life an utter misery at times, I take clonidine to help control it , but sometimes they just doesn't work , which is what is happening at this time ( last 5-6 months) the sweats can be so bad that I am dripping off my face , my hair is sticking to my head and my clothes are so wet I cannot take then off as they are stuck to my body , so at this time I'm virtually a prisoner in my own home .

Hi Ami,

That is such a funny story! Although the problem certainly is not. Yes I have trouble with my vision too. Especially standing. Weird things like things looking dark, and smeared.

I do have a tendancy to sweat a lot I will soak my shirt from only a slight amount of exertion (under my breasts) but my armpits hardly ever sweat....go figure. I certainly don't sweat to the degree your describing.....that must be just awful. I'm so sorry....Maybe one day we can get all these strange little symptoms figured out.

Thanks for sharing that.

Hi Suzy,

Sorry, it took me a while to get back and respond to your reply. Yes, among other things exercises like Kegels may be helpful. Like many others have said try to see a specialist to see what they say. Also, depending on what is exactly going on there are other therapies that a physical therapist that treats/specializes in womens health issues can help treat incontinence.

It could also be from nerve damage from having given birth. I don't have experience in this area, but depending on how you deliver and if you have to have an episetomy (sp?) etc. You can have damage to the nerve(s) that control the sphincter and sensation in the area. Your best bet would be to find someone (dr/PT) familiar with these types of issues.

Hi AJW, Thank you. Sorry I didn't reply sooner...computer problems. I did have an episiotomy, on one birth, and tore on the other. I am going to see doctors this next month, and I will ask them who I can see about this. Thanks for your help. B)
