Heart skipping a beat!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

last night I experienced what I call an adrenaline rush no doctor has bothered to test me for anything though. My heart races, my legs start shaking then my whole body shakes and then my legs freeze up and I can't walk properly, I went to lay down as I do when this happens and I checked my pulse and my heart starting skipping every second beat! This scared me so badly I hardly slept all night and kept my oxygen and hr monitor on my finger all night incase I stopped breathing it could make noise to alert my partner. Now I am scared, my chest feels like it's buzzing and I don't know what to do? I went to my gp and he suggested a holter monitor but at my own expense and at this stage I have no money as I haven't been working because of this stupid illness. Anyone else's experiences with this would be greatly appreciated I don't know if I should go to ER again but they will probably just send me home

These symptoms are definitely consistent w POTS or other dysautonomia.  I know how scary it is.  I used to have symptoms like this--I was told at the time I was having panic attacks.  Many people experience PACs and PVCs which feels scary (heart skipping a beat) but is benign.  Do you have a diagnosis?  Whenever new symptoms crop up it's good to check in with a doctor.  Do you have a doctor you can call?  Or a nurse in a doctor's office?  If you have been seeing a doctor they should be willing to call you back and hear your symptoms and determine if you should be seen.

When I have what I'm only guessing is an adrenaline rush I haven't been diagnosed as to that is what's happening but my legs shake and seize up like rocks my heart rate jumps to 100+ laying down and I get this thump in my chest then it feels like my heart is gone and not there until I feel the next beat. I haven't had any levels checked to do with adrenaline. I just lay down and my body shakes for about 10 minutes until it subsides. I haven't had these skipped beats before so I freaked out a little and stopped checking my pulse manually as I have a Fitbit hr so I kept an eye on it with that. When I have used my bp machine it has showed an irregular heartbeat on occasion but I thought maybe I had moved or something so I hadn't taken notice of it.

Have you had a 24 hr holter monitor?  That might give you peace of mind as the dr could confirm that the skipped beats are benign.  Actually many people have PVCs and PACs, from what I have read and been told by my dr.  For some reason it seems POTS patients may feel them more intensely/notice them at all.

Again I had very similar symptoms--sudden feeling of a rush of adrenaline and then tachycardia, skipped beats, shaking.  Really just like a panic attack (which is what I was initially diagnosed with).  The only thing was it would hit me out of the blue and I didn't feel anxiety (until it occurred and scared me!).

Hope today is a better day!

That sounds similar to me as well during my adrenaline rushes.  The PVCs showed up on my holtor monitor and on the EKG during my trips to the ER and was told not to worry too much about them since the rest of the results were normal.  I was terrified about the PVCs, chest pressure, blood pressure, and the heart rate issues.

My adrenaline rushes were absolute torture.  The norepinephrine highs created a vicious self perpetuating anxiety cycle that I just couldn't get under control and my blood pressure would spike to really high levels during my episodes.  It took me several months to get things under control, but I eventually did and I am mostly back to normal now.

Does your blood pressure get high during your attacks?  I am also curious if your lying down vs standing blood pressure is noticeably different when you are not having attacks?

What are you doing when this rush happens?? I can only stand/walk/be upright for about 30 minutes (worked at getting to 30 min from original 20 min a year ago) without symptoms. I have identical symptoms as you and will get worse if I don't lay down or recline. I pace everything I do and am sure to be sitting reclined at 30 degrees before the 30 min time. And it can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes before I can get up again.  My TTT was positive but even with a BP of 54/42 I still don't pass out but it feels horrible!!! I can't sit upright leaning forward for more than 30 min either and if there are "expectations" that trigger anxiety, then I am even worse. I have been unable to work as well .

I have palpatations-which is 3-6 beats of PVC's together and it happens even when I am reclining. I would strongly urge you to let an MD know about yours. They put me thru the cardiac ringer so I an OK with mine BUT that is because they are self limiting and brief and I have no other symptoms with them-they can come while other are building but that is my stupidity of not stopping soon enough.

Does that make sense?

Hope you find some answers soon

Debbie
